The risk of releasing potentially hazardous substances in an underground tank leak needs to be addressed in the tank's construction phase, to ensure that the technical requirements for proper operation are fully satisfied. Corrosion is one of the main causes for the release of hazardous substances from underground tanks. In concert with the principle international industry standards regarding the durability and performance efficiency of underground tanks for the storage of oil, ICC has developed a series of technical specifications, operational protocols, automatic calculation formulas, special controls and acceptability criteria for the product, to be applied (thicknesses of steel and coatings, adherence and continuity of the coating, visual inspections, inspections during unloading and burying, and so forth) during the entire useful life of the tank. These may be summarized in four phases:

All four phases may be subject to strict inspections, after which the ICC test certificate is issued with the recorded results.
 
 

Tank Inspection without interrupting operation

During operations tanks are not accessible unless they are emptied and cleaned up. "Acoustic emission" is an advanced, non-destructive technique to inspect and map the metal walls of a storage tank while in use, as specified in the applicable EN 15856:2010 standard.
The data obtained by this kind of mapping reveals fatigue, corrosion damage under stress, static breaking stress and similar mechanisms that can lead to the deterioration of a storage facility for potentially contaminating liquids. Using a ranking system, the analysis of the results obtained help classify the status of the bottom of the tank and prioritize the maintenance investments required. All of this is aimed at preserving the value of the facilities.
